I am entering a rather interesting Italian composer's competition, the Frammentazioni, in which all entries have to be under a minute long. I thought the six clarinet studies (Propagation) would be ideal for this, and if selected it's also a great chance to claim a broadcast credit on European radio.

Isn’t it funny? When you’re a fresh-faced kid in primary school, the possibilities of your imagination are limitless. Wherever you go, whatever you do, there is nothing beyond reach.

Then a few more years pass. Primary school turns into high school, high school turns into university and then you’re thrust out into the open world. Unless you’re lucky enough to have been doing what you wanted all your life, you’ll probably end up in a dead end job for a while trying to pay back student loans.

Which begs the question, why go to university or college at all? The tangible benefit of going to university isn’t as clear-cut as it was twenty years ago. Now that you can do a degree in fucking David Beckham studies, loads more people are taking degrees. The upshot of this is that the value of a degree is a lot less than it was.

The natural conclusion of this is that several people are probably stuck in jobs they hate, or have no idea why they’re doing them. All because of money when they were students.

And then, in an effort to thwart the student loan vultures, life becomes a sequence of 60 hour weeks with a neat nine hour gap daily for microwaving dinner, glancing at the news, sleeping, getting up and doing it all over again.

Of course, the dear government taxing 22% doesn’t help either. It merely takes longer to repay all that was borrowed. How can these hypocrites who run the country outline these so-called "visions" for England’s future whilst simultaneously offering no incentive to better yourself?

That is the point at which the realities of life crush whatever childhood ambitions you once held.

So how shall I kill time in Chennai? Maybe a day trip to the beach? Or a 3 hour FB session at the internet cafe. There's always comedy on 'Star World'. Seinfeld's starting to grow on me. Then there's Friends, My wife and kids, 8 simple rules, Frasier, the list goes on!

But London is soo much better. I'm itching to go back. Can't wait. The countdown has started!

Gah. Today is a bad day. I formally got rejected by the National Lottery for Arts Council funding: "the participation element of your activity shows weakness." Not really sure how wider participation could have been encouraged, considering I wrote for 53 players, as well as intending to recruit musicians from the local schools, but oh well. We could still put the rock opera on someday, and whilst that's what I intend to do, it will have to sit on the shelf for now.

Getting ready for Goa

It's about time we moved on to another town, I'm starting to get a little bored. Thought I'd catch up with some mates on FB to kill time. Not much has been happening recently. All my sisters talk about is sari this...lenga that....sari this....bangle that.....tailors, size, colour, bla bla bla.

Hopefully the next week will be more entertaining and fulfilling. Apparently Goa is the place to go; sure it'll live up to the hype, but I don't want to get too excited...

There are a few bargains here in Chennai. If you do ever go, I recommend Spencer Plaza. It's the equivalent of a Harrow St Ann's or the Brent Cross Complex. I bought a 8-in-1 DVD pack for 200 rupees (3 quid!) and the previews are excellent quality. It includes Kill Bill 1+2, Scarface, and some others I can't remember.

Repeat: 8 films for 3 pounds!! Buy of the decade.

I've found another internet cafe where I can update my status, find out what I'm missing in London (sweet FA i assume), and give you the latest from the hole that is Chennai. They give a good rate here: 30 rupees for an hour of net surfing. The currency hasn't changed much since last year; it's still roughly 80 rupees to the pound. So for 60 minutes of quality browsing, its only 40p. Not bad eh?

The daughter of my Tamil school teacher got married today. It was nice to meet some friends from back in the day. (Smile Veena you're on the net!) When I mean 'back in the day', I really mean far far back. When I was 6, I started learning my mother tongue Tamil at a local Sunday school in Wembley. And a year later I started learning carnatic flute. By the time I was 12, I was taking Tamil classes at near GCSE level, and one of my teachers was Mrs Vadivel.

Fast forward another 10 years and I'm attending her daughter (Sharmila)'s wedding. It was a very short ceremony, roughly 25-30 minutes. For those of you who are not accustomed with our Hindu/Tamil tradition, you must be wondering why I refer to half an hour as 'short'. Usually, a full blown ceremony like this lasts for 2-3 hours. Yep! That's right! You heard it from me.

2nd day in Chennai

Greetings from Chennai! I’ve been in India for just over a day now, we touched down around 3am on Wed 23rd. The time difference is 5 and a half hours. So if its midday in UK, its 5.30pm in India. I managed to catch the 1st half of the CL final Milan v. Liverpool, even though it was stupid o’clock here. Inzaghi’s fluke goal in the 44th minute set Milan on their way.

I was expecting a Liverpool resurgence in the 2nd half. But, when it kicked off, there was a power cut in the hotel. Noooooooo! 2 minutes later, the power came back on. But the TV screwed up and I was too tired to wait, so I drifted off back to sleep.

And now here I am in the hotel internet café (albeit a solitary computer in one of the offices). And I find out Milan had won 2-1. Woo! 200 quid! Shiiipppiiiiiit.

Gona pick my outfit for Janani (my sister)’s wedding. This week is intense, we’re sorting out dresses, invitations and what not. Fun fun FUN!

This morning I received a letter from the regional office for 'Grants for the Arts' acknowledging my application for the rock opera, which is good news, but how much time was wasted over the initial (and now lost) application? At this stage it is being assessed. Then it's "considered against their priorities." Finally, they reach a decision and I get another letter, whatever happens. According to the letter a decision will be reached within six weeks, although the guidance notes said twelve. No complaints there.

The weather of late has been much more wholesome, which is brilliant: everyone seems to get along better and relax more, contrasted against the depressing overcast skylines we are only too familiar with throughout winter.

There's a whole load of uni work I should be doing right now, but I'm having a breather. A piece combining flamenco guitar with German postmodernism, the big 15 minute music-to-picture project, a history of film music class, and two more underscore jobs.

In the little spare time I have remaining, I plough on with scoring Iridescence Fantasia for Aaron, oversee any developments in the rock opera, and get comfortable with my new-found favourite book: Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. One of its central arguments is that all organised religion conspires to pit its worshippers against each other, and I have to say I agree with that. So if there are any potential atheists out there, read it!

Ok, first of all an apology for all the bulletins I haven't been sending out. I don't know why someone wants to bother hacking my site because there's nothing worth taking lol, so other than getting new antivirus stuff and changing passwords I have no idea what else to do. Suggestions are welcome.

My New Year was both good (Cockpit) and shite (losing £100 for no reason.) but tending more towards the shite. Hope everyone else's was better, although that won't be difficult!

We had to record a sax quartet last week and everybody's piece turned out fine. Except, of course, mine. Apparently what I wrote was "too hard", even though there were no real problems with the tempo. The phrasing was admittedly a little irregular but still, they are supposed professionals...I think it's all in the head. The fact that mine was the last to be performed at almost 9pm probably didn't help. My tutor went ape shit when he found out we would have to reschedule, which was funny as. The other good thing to come out of all that was they "really enjoyed playing what they could". Not sure if this is a backhanded compliment or not. One of the Deltas mentioned that he might pass it on to some colleagues at the London Sinfonietta. Either way I can't win with this tutor. I can either get an extension on the work and lose marks for having an unfair time advantage. Or I can give a synthetic score in and lose marks for bad production quality. Doh.

I'm also typing my CV and scouring the land for a new job. There's only so much of one place I can take at one time, and unfortunately the current place is somewhere where I'm ideally on my best behaviour for 8 or 9 hours a day whilst dealing with snotty customers. I want out.

Last but not least, it's almost bloody Valentine's Day again. I cannot fail to notice this because I'm constantly reminded of it at work. Anyone else being an anarchist for that day?

[January] Niente.
[February] Snow angels were made. The set of four piano fantasias (Fantasiae) was completed.
[March] Catherine moved in. Bringing her dogs ensured I saw my cats about three times in the next month. House looked like a skip. Did a few temp jobs in an effort to massage the old bank balance, one of which included working for a diehard BNP supporter at the Highways Agency in Mitcham.
[April] Aunt calls from Canada. I get offered a free return ticket and somewhere to stay for two weeks in the heart of Toronto. At this point there is only one real answer.
[May] CANADA. Manage to get out of spending the entire break with my aunt and take the train to Orangeville (the 'sticks') where my cousin lives. Gave her kid a Donnie Darko-style halloween costume. I'm told that he doesn't wear anything else for five days. When I get back to Toronto 36 hours later, play lots of online poker in the internet cafes to avoid being dragged around shops old-lady style. Don't I seem grateful for the free holiday? Lol.
[June] Catch up time with the guys in Leeds. Moor Park Drive has been signed over to some other students and we all congegrate for a last time. Fab, Hard Rock, Drydock and Cockpit ensue. Applied for MA at Kingston and receive an unconditional place.
[July] 7th = 22nd birthday. Jesus Christ. Evening = Black Sheep with Adam and Bob. I chat up a hot indie girl and I start to think this might be a birthday worth remembering, but this is short-lived as Bob's had way too much to drink so we have no choice but to drag him home. He's so drunk that he pisses himself at West Croydon waiting for the last train.
[August] More Leeds shenanigans. Cockpit is predictably empty as all the students have gone elsewhere.
[September] Start of MA. Although every MA student has stumped up four grand for the one year course, Kingston still thinks it is acceptable to give us 99p red wine at induction. Cheapskates. Make a stern personal resolution to graduate in top 2 of class. Get a new job on the 30th.
[October] Several trips to the British Library because the first two bits of work for the year call for extended research. The Kingston library appears to have 50 CDs in all and possibly less books. Wonder what I have let myself in for.
[November] Miss Bonfire night as I'm slaving away at the supermarket. Naomi's birthday, imminent hangover at Assembly Rooms. Charles's birthday: the same, but in London.
[December] First marked work of MA given back. I get a 75 which is a distinction and the best in class. Drunk at O' Neills on xmas eve. Frantically try to wrap presents last minute when I get in. Christmas Day: could have been a lot better. Mostly because a lot of Catherine's family showed up. Lots of false smiles and sang froid all round. New Year's eve spent in Leeds with Dan and Chris at good old Cockpit. Only place I know where double vodka coke is £2 all night. Bender. Wake up in the afternoon at some point with raging headache.

He arrived at the downs and sank wearily into the fresh heather. Having barely slept the previous night, he sought solace in isolation. With his chin in his knees, he eyed the London panorama before him. The morning sky was so blue it pained him to look at it. There wasn't a single cloud diluting the image, either. The first initially latent dog walkers were now beginning to assemble sporadically on the downs, and the crisp morning air resonated with barking.

Sleep had deserted him because, in his experience, he considered it much more beneficial to work through the night hours. This new-found work philosophy did not posit well with others in the household, however. There may have been far too many distractions of all kinds in the daytime, but the canine pets still arose with their owners early in the mornings and successfully disrupted his daytime sleep patterns severely. He felt as if there was no way out, that he would be forever chained – at least ideologically – to an anti-creative lifestyle. To put it bluntly, the raw passion had been there a long time, but never before had he faced so many simultaneous obstacles: whether these were financial, physical or emotional in nature was of little relevance right now. What he did know was that these obstacles were slowly but surely draining him of the will to achieve.

At the back of his head was this concept of moderation. There were days when he felt himself so extremely off the scale that moderation would have appeared little more than a shooting star. And who decides the scale anyway? Society? If enough people participate in a particular activity does that make it genuine and 'alright'? ('Like binge drinking', he thought soberly) If few enough people participate does it automatically become a sickness, a fantasy, a delusion – grounds to throw them in a mental home and throw away the key? (Like murder? If more people were killers would the taboo aspect of killing be removed?) Some people won't go on an aeroplane without stress-reducing blankets, socks and pillows for fear of DVT. What the hell did these people do before the term DVT was even invented?

As one can see, this was a concept that especially frustrated him. He considered that all the geniuses of the past - the Einsteins, Curies and Newtons of this world – had to be eccentric on some intellectual level to derive and advocate their initially outrageous theories. Imagine if Einstein lived in modern times: would he have bothered tending to his theory of relativity if he was instead concerned with getting pissed six nights a week; (never mind, we'll sort you out a new liver just as soon as a hardworking scientist has invented the technology) closing in like a predator on a girl in a club; (perhaps a post-sex curry with the lads?) shopping at Tesco's; (oops, he's spent too much again…) wondering if he had the latest fashionable mobile phone… and then, as he lay back in the heather, the realisation came to him: ultimately we are concerned with the most asinine trivial matters that add up to nothing.

He stepped out his car, reaching for the keys to lock it, vaguely noting the dull metallic echo of the concrete jungle as he shut the door. Then he walked down seven flights of stairs, swigging the beer in his hand. He often came to this place when he needed to get away from things: it was his sanctuary. He dare not think what might happen if it did not exist.

A light drizzle was falling outside. It made the seaside clubbers universally neutral. They became one with the night and rain, and had nothing of value to offer him beyond the usual self-important drunken statements: their pub bravado appeared and disappeared as quickly as the smoke portending from the chip shop. Although the rain intensified and forced the streets into a vague resemblance of mini-canals, he trudged onwards towards the pier.

It wasn't the falsified, superficial lure of neon lights which attracted him so. It wasn't a desire to be in close proximity to a large group of people, although loneliness likes company. Actually, the reason why sitting directly under the pier was his favourite spot ever was simple: nobody ever came down there, and yet he could still overhear snippets of conversation ten metres above, in between the carousel music. He wondered briefly if this made him a voyeur and decided it didn't matter. He considered labels to be unhelpful, and were only valuable in the same sort of way as judging a book: they helped you make a snap decision that was ultimately of no consequence.

From his vantage point, he stared out at the sea. The waves were black, highly choppy and looked about five foot high. The skyline was mauve and the point at which the two met was almost impossible to tell. His inner jacket pocket contained a Walkman: he turned it on and closed his eyes, resting his back against one of the pier's supports. The low evening temperature helped maintain the beer's coolness, which was pleasing to him, and he took another swig. Lately, he just felt so tired, even with ample amounts of sleep. It was as though every muscle in his body was preset at age fifty, although of course physically he was still a youth.

'Nice Guys Finish Last' came on. He thought about a time several years ago when he had decided there was indeed some truth in this: for a week or so he made up his mind to act like one of those idiots who seems to know nothing, and yet get most of life's great rewards for the privilege. Naturally, this was of no consequence. Whilst friends told him that this was all very well, the bigger message was 'you shouldn't be something you're not. Be yourself.' Problem: He is a nice guy. He doesn't want to finish last. He wants to matter, and be relevant to someone. Isn't that what most people spend their entire adult lives dreaming of finding?
That's why he did that thing for a week. Then he remembered a classic situation at college: the nice guy ends up the shoulder to cry on, the agony uncle figure. In short, it's a recipe for platonicism. It's so much more interesting, he thought, when one can experience both sides of the coin and see what happens.

He tried to switch off mentally for the next hour or so. Just the Walkman going, no thoughts, no distractions, no calls. When the disc finished, he gulped down the remaining beer and crushed the empty can in his hand. With his spare hand, he picked up a few loose stones and tossed them one by one into the pitch black water. The tide appeared to be coming in, which mysteriously made him hungry: he found something to eat along the seafront, and with a heavy heart set off towards his car to go home.

Cloudcast. A short story.

Once upon a time, in a concrete dump called Chaville lived a boy with his family, with whom he had not much in common. The previous night he was in Leeds, having gone out with some old friends. He met a totally hot, totally unattainable second year girl called Becky. He returned to his car, scraped the frost off and drove home in the middle of the night.

For three hours, he was entranced by the various shades and nuances of light on the road. Amber, red, blue, and green reflected off the wet tarmac and made pixellated superimpositions onto his windscreen. With the motorway empty and the fog so thickly spread, it might as well have been just him in the world, lost in a high-speed shuttle.

He returned home exhausted and went to bed, yet he could not sleep. He hunched his knees under his chin and stared out his bedroom window at the remaining fog encapsulating the entire street, and thought it was one of the most amazing things he'd ever seen. Is this what a nuclear dust cloud is like, enveloping everything in its path? Will it arrive one day in our sleep? Will we ever control everything we want to?

You can't get hurt if you don't care. But he always cared.

Busy week coming up. Apart from working 11-9, there’s Thanusha’s birthday party on Wednesday, work Xmas party on Friday. Then Saturday, there’s a Habs reunion and a family get together with all my cousins….. FUN fun FUN!!

What a coincidence. Of all the days, I chose to post today. I didn’t plan it, honest! Well how’s everyone been? 2 months gone, not a lot has happened.

Good news, the board from the Maths department gave me a chance to defer my 2^nd year till next September. I started a call centre job 2 weeks ago. It’s based in Old Street EC1, just down the road from GS. The first 2 campaigns I was dialling were under AIG. Standard cold calling, insurance, sound familiar?

But on Thursday, out of the blue, the team leaders moved me and some others to the BT campaign. It involves calling existing BT broadband customers to upgrade their package for a reduced price. No catch. So selling the product is a piece of piss.

Sunday should be fun….watching Fabregas and co humiliate Chelski at the Bridge. Good luck to England in the Ashes, trying to claw back a 2-0 deficit.

I’ll try and post more regularly, can’t guarantee anything, especially with the Christmas period coming up. In the meantime, you can catch a sneak preview of Jim Carrey’s next film.

Busy, busy, busy. Things to note this month:

1. A chap called Aaron on the MA Performing course is really interested in Fantasiae and wants to perform one or more of the set of 4 pieces at an open recital sometime in the New Year, hopefully February - first public performance of one of my works, yay! Unfortunately all of Fantasiae was totally improvised, so along with providing Aaron with a CD I will have to make laborious attempts to transcribe them for a perfect rendition.

2. Writing a little something for two second year sopranos' performance project.

3. Averaging 45-50 hours of work a week. Shame about the slave wages, but meh.

4. Yesterday, Gavin Greenaway guest lectured at uni. He singlehandedly renewed my faith in film music composition. Having orchestrated and conducted for greats such as James Horner, James Newton Howard, Hans Zimmer, Klaus Badelt and Howard Shore there is probably nobody better qualified to speak on film music....well, the actual composers excepting of course. It was really refreshing to meet someone who has been through the Hollywood machine and is still bullshit free. On top of that, he seemed genuinely interested in my questions and appeared to enjoy himself.

5. A chance might arise to write something for the Liturgical Choir and, if successful, spend a week in Prague hearing it being recorded and performed.

6. The jury's still out on the rock opera, although Catherine's sister knows the guy who runs and manages bookings at the Charles Cryer, which should be interesting...

7. Getting drunk on Wetherspoons champagne leaves you with one of the worst hangovers imaginable.

Muse in Sheffield

MUSE - Sheffield Hallam FM Arena, 18/11/06

Always a joy to behold live, Muse utterly entranced the Sheffield crowd with their sublime set list. Very few drummers can ply their trade fast AND accurately but Dom does this without even breaking a sweat! Then of course the razor sharp riffs in the likes of Stockholm Syndrome and THAT solo in Hysteria..... there's not much more you can ask for in a 90 minute gig, to be honest. Whereas most bands in the business exist to milk one 3 minute single dry, Muse have deep, deep reserves of quality and it shows. I'm sure this has been mentioned before but every song sounds like a hit single. An outstanding gig, with a welcome return to the setlist for Citizen Erased. Special plaudits to Matt for comically surfing on his amp and falling off =) Also noticed cameras here so hopefully another DVD is winging its way to the high street soon. One minor gripe - no Assassin. I'd pay for a ticket again just to hear Dom's drum fill on that. Maybe next time! Cheers Muse.

Dropout takes on snooker legend

Guess where I was on Monday/Tuesday ……yeah well everyone else is busy and it’s too boring at home. Anyway, I was playing on a £25-£50 game and after a decent run I decided to switch table. Simon, 1 of the dealers, started up a £50 round of each. That is, 4 rounds of Hold'em, then 4 rounds of Omaha. So I joined and was doing OK, with 6 players on the table it was a good laugh with great banter.

After about half an hour, a new player came along and took the seat directly beside me. Though he was no ordinary player. It was none other than 6 times snooker world champion STEVE DAVIS!!!. Yeah, that’s right; I played poker against a legend. But it was damn hard to get any money off him; he’s a super rock, folding nearly all his hands. He’s a very nice guy, down-to-earth, not a bad word to say about him.

Moving on to Tuesday, I reached the final table of the £20 freezeout. I finished 8^th. My final hand was A-Q on the button. I ran into A-K small blind and 7-7 big blind. Ouch.

Gonna take a week break from there, apply for a job and see where fate takes me. Have a great weekend people!!

Had three jobs earlier this week, now down to one. Unfortunately the remaining one is a crummy supermarket job that a 16 year old kid could do, so it's good to see university education being so worthwhile! On the other hand, money's tight, so I don't have an option.

The Masters course is going quite well although it is slow and uninspiring in places. Tonight's lecture was a prime example, in which the lecturer's sole teaching method was to read verbatim off handouts. Incredibly boring.

Feel like pouring myself a drink, collapsing into bed and watching Scrubs, Simpsons or something comedic...

The general election is a long way off but I sincerely hope that the Conservatives win. Yes, the party has faults, but these pale into insignificance when you consider the nanny-state arrogance pervading the present government. It seems people around the country agree:

1) The few die-hard Labour supporters on here, who keep harping on about "people have forgotten the horrors of the Tory years" are living in a dream world. A lot of new voters, who have been able to vote only under Labour have no idea how comparatively clean the Tories were compared to the sleaze, scandal and spin of New Labour. I can remember vividly the good, and the bad points of the Tory years, and I know which one I would rather live under. At least we would have a little more control over our own destiny, immigration would be under scrutiny, crime would be lower due to tougher sentencing.

2) Everyone knows labour is a complete joke! What i can't get me head round is why did the people of this country vote them back in last year?

The problems we have now haven't just crept up on us now, they were there for all to see before the election.
